The mitochondrial subcompartments, consisting of the outer membrane, the inter membrane space, the inner membrane, and the matrix.
Each contain a specific set of in total approximately 700 different proteins.
They have to be imported in a continuous process into the growing and dividing organelles.
Protein targeting or protein sorting is the biological mechanism by which proteins are transported to their appropriate destinations in the cell or outside it. Proteins can be targeted to
the inner space of an organelle,
different intracellular membranes,
plasma membrane, or
to exterior of the cell via secretion.
