A New Genre: The “Strand Game”
Hideo Kojima frames Death Stranding as the first of a new genre he calls a strand game — a style built around connection, social systems, and indirect cooperation. Just as Metal Gear helped define stealth, Death Stranding aims to define this new category.

🚶‍♂️ Core Gameplay: Delivering, Connecting, Surviving
You play as Sam Porter Bridges, a courier working for BRIDGES. Your job is to:
• Deliver cargo to isolated cities and individuals (the KNOTs and various preppers)
• Reconnect America through the Chiral Network
• Manage Sam’s balance, weight, and cargo placement to navigate harsh terrain
• Earn “likes” from NPCs, which improve Sam’s stats and relationships
Traversal is the heart of the game — every step matters.

🎵 Music as Atmosphere
The game heavily features licensed tracks, especially from Low Roar and Silent Poets, used to elevate emotional moments during exploration. Kojima has said Low Roar’s sound was essential to the game’s identity, and after Ryan Karazija’s passing, he emphasized how deeply the band shaped Death Stranding’s creation.

👻 Enemies & Threats
You face three major threats:
BTs (Beached Things)
• Invisible supernatural entities
• Surrounded by Timefall, a rain that rapidly ages cargo and gear
• Detected using Sam’s odradek sensor
• Killing Sam can trigger a voidout, leaving a permanent crater
MULEs
• Former porters obsessed with stealing cargo
• Non-lethal but relentless
Demens
• A violent offshoot of MULEs who kill porters for their cargo

💀 Death & Repatriation
Sam is a repatriate, meaning death sends him to the Seam, an underwater limbo where he can return to his body. But dying to a BT is catastrophic for the world itself.

🏗️ Building the World Together
As you expand the Chiral Network, you unlock:
• Crafting via the PCC (bridges, generators, zip-lines, etc.)
• Shared online structures and supplies left by other players
• Lost cargo from other players that you can recover and deliver
You never meet other players directly — the connection is asynchronous, symbolic, and thematic.
