Captured by NASA’s Curiosity and Spirit rovers, these are real photographs of a sunset on Mars — and unlike Earth, Mars ends its days in a deep blue glow.
This happens because the fine dust in the Martian atmosphere scatters sunlight in the opposite way we’re used to: it absorbs most of the red light but allows blue light to pass straight through, creating an icy blue halo around the setting Sun.

These images were taken on the Martian surface during evening hours by rover cameras designed to handle the planet’s thin, dust-filled atmosphere. The Sun looks smaller than it does from Earth because Mars orbits about 80 million km farther away, making the sunlight weaker and colder.

Mars sunsets are rare to capture — the rover must be in the right position, during a clear-enough sky, and facing the Sun at exactly the right moment. These frames show the planet’s atmosphere illuminated from behind, revealing the soft blue haze that appears only when the Sun is low on the horizon.

This is one of the most breathtaking views ever recorded on another world — a cold, blue ending to a Martian day.
