Model shown: Honda City 5MT GM 2009-2014
Similar modern brake drum setups: Honda Jazz GE8, Honda Fit, Honda Brio, Honda BRV
Similar procedure for older Honda models that have drum brakes like the Civic, etc
- Drum size may vary according to model, for eg 2002-2008 Honda City,Jazz/Fit inner diameter is 179.9-180.0 mm, to be replaced when diamter reaches 181 mm.

In this video I will show you how you can adjust your rear drum brakes. Here, the drum brakes make a clunking, pulsing or skipping noise because of excessive gap between the brake shoes and the drum, plus the drum itself isn’t smooth. Over time brake material forms deposits on the drum causing an uneven surface. I used 320 grit sand paper to smoothen the surface and also scuffed up the brake shoes.

You can adjust the brake shoes via the adjuster screw or star wheel, in this application move the screw/star wheel down a few clicks. You should have a little bit of resistance when you turn the drum. After adjustment braking has improved as the drum brakes are contributing more to overall braking.

Honda brake shoes, you have to replace them when they reach a thickness of 1mm or less. Measure it with a ruler across the brake material. When new they are around 4.3mm. The drum, when the inner diameter reaches 201mm or less it needs to be replaced OR if the drum isn’t round and its warped. You can get the drums machine surfaced that can remove imperfections in the roundness. But once you reached the 201mm limit, it must be replaced. You can measure the inner diamter with a vernier caliper tool.

Honda wheel lug nuts that are m12 size are torqued to 80 lbf-ft. Most, if not all, Honda cars that have rear drum brakes use m12 size lug nuts. Torque it with the hand brake off.

Want to adjust without taking the wheel off? Behind the drum you have an oblong access port, covered with a rubber plug. You can fit a flathead screw driver inside and adjust the screw/star wheel. However if you tighten it too much, it would be extremely dififfcult to reverse - you may have to take the drum off.

When you adjust your brake shoes, rear brake discs or change your brake shoes/pads you need to adjust your handbrake (parking brake) - if you have a traditional cable handbrake. It will tighten, less number of clicks.
