Hello and welcome back! This video is going to be first video looking in depth on how to write an actual form of poem. The wonderfully ingestible Haiku. My name’s Adam Gary, and if you’re new here please do consider subscribing and of course if at any point you find this video entertaining, hit that like button. In this video I’m going to be teaching you about the traditional Japanese poem, where they came from, what they mean, and of course… how to write one perfectly. Also make sure you stick around until the end of the video, as I’ll be attempting a quick fire Haiku to use as an example! So let’s get into it!

Haikus are one of the oldest forms of poetry emerging in the 17th century, and still popular today. Becoming known in the west in the 1850s with thanks to writers such as James Joyce, but what really brought poets of today’s generation were of course the beats. Ginsberg and Kerouac especially taking a liking to them. So how do we write one? Let me tell you.

First, we must learn the structure. The perfect construct of a Haiku consists of three lines, with 17 syllables. The first line has 5, the second line has 7, and the final line also has 5. Most poets would stop the video there and crack on! And that’s fine if that’s your game. As a huge admirer of Kerouac and his spontaneous prose style, I myself leave it at that and just crack on. But, as we’re looking to create something a little meaningful we’re going to dig a big deeper. And that’s exactly our next step. digging deeper for meaning.

Now as my fellow poets, I don’t need to tell you that without meaning there really isn’t any point in us doing what we do. It’s out job to convey emotions and themes in our work, and with Haiku, there’s a very traditional way of doing that. The japanese Haiku poets of old usually conveyed their themes, and messages through nature. Which works for me because it’s one of my favourite places to be! Of course, modern haikus have branched away from that these days and that’s okay, in fact I know most of my subscribers are watching because they are making moves in the instapoetry world, and a modern Haiku is a great way to introduce yourself as a serious modern poet. But, lets continue down the traditional route of writing through nature. So before you move forward, take some time to consider your theme, emotion, and or message.

And the final thing you want to keep in mind when writing a strong Haiku, is a standout juxtaposition. Meaning, present your reader with two strong, differing images and putting them together.

POETRY EXAMPLE

Snow capped Everest
Strength rises from roots, to peaks
The hawk soars freely

So remember, although on the surface Haikus can appear to be simple and without substance, they can take real crafting if done to the “rules” of tradition. Like everything, once you’ve learnt and mastered the rules, they can then be broken. Steer away from nature. Add a syllable or too, whatever you please. Also, they can be a great way to get an instapoem written if that’s your game. My name’s Adam Gary, and you can find me across all major social medias if you wish. Don’t forget to subscribe for more videos like this, and like this video if you learnt anything at all. Good luck friends and I’ll see you next week!
