Set in the town of Digby, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1937.
Maud goes to Shortliffe’s General Store in Digby and gets her first glimpse of Everett Lewis when he comes in to place an advertisement for a housemaid.
“When we first meet Maud (she’s only called Maudie once, at the end) she’s living with her aunt in Nova Scotia, her uncaring older brother having dumped her there after selling their parents’ house. ...the day after a shouting match with her aunt, as Maud is buying canned goods at a general store, he walks in.
Scholars and philosophers have long marvelled at the strange behaviour of the human heart. Ethan Hawke’s Everett is a loud, brusque man with a short fuse and small vocabulary. And yet, when Maud sees him post an ad for a live-in housemaid, something draws her to him.
It could just be that it’s the only possible job around, and she needs to do something with her life, but after five minutes with this cruel, nasty fish pedlar, any reasonable person would be running in the other direction.” - Jordan Hoffman, theguardian, 3 September 2016
‘...a small town in the 1930s was a tough place to be a woman, and even tougher for a woman whose own family regarded her as an invalid. So, when the local curmudgeon posts an ad looking for a live-in housekeeper, it’s easy to understand why Maud jumps at the chance to assert her agency.
What Maud doesn’t know is that her reluctant new employer, an orphaned fish peddler who lives in a musty shack so small it seems fit for a fairy tale, might be less of a curmudgeon than a sociopathic son of a bitch. Played by Ethan Hawke (whose growly, mealy-mouthed performance seems pitched somewhere between “Beauty and the Beast” and “Sling Blade”), Everett Lewis is a violent, misanthropic loner...’ - David Ehrlich, IndieWire; Sep 3, 2016
“...Maud ([Sally] Hawkins), who suffers from crippling arthritis and a curved back, seeks to break free of her overprotective family, taking a job as a live-in maid for the cantankerous loner Everett Lewis ([Ethan] Hawke), who sells fish around the community. ...
Hawkins’ big eyes convey Maud’s relief at meeting someone who learns to accept her... Portraying Maud’s stiff gait, nervous smile and hunched posture, Hawkins could easily have devolved into disease-of-the-week showiness. Instead, she exudes a bruised sweetness that’s wholly organic...
By comparison, the layers of inarticulate rage within Everett can make [Ethan] Hawke’s performance feel monotonously pained. ...” - Tim Grierson, SCREENDAILY, 3 September 2016
“Despite his best efforts, Ethan Hawke is miscast (and mismatched with [Sally] Hawkins) as [Maud’s] chronically cranky, abusive husband Everett, an antisocial fish hawker who hires [Maud] as his housekeeper... Nonetheless, Hawkins charms with her ability to convey [Maud’s] impish buoyancy despite moments of heartbreak and her physical deterioration from rheumatoid arthritis.” - Craig Takeuchi, THE GEORGIA straight; October 3rd, 2016
