Through the 19th century, Adivasis, ravaged by the brutal imposition of modernity, repeatedly rebelled against the colonial state, and the Indian government which succeeded it. Although India has succeeded in crushing the Maoist movement in most of its heartlands, Adivasi anger continues to empower insurgents operating in Bastar and the Dandakaranya region.
