Struggling with excess facial hair on the chin, face, back or stomach? Watch this video by Dr Mansi Verma, Gynaecologist at Veera Health as she explains proven tips to manage hirsutism in PCOS.
In women, the female sex hormone oestrogen makes the hair fine and soft. On the other hand, male sex hormones, androgens, are responsible for dark, coarse hair. In addition to producing female sex hormones, a woman’s ovaries also naturally produce a small number of androgens.
When there is an excess level of androgens produced, it imparts male-like characteristics such as excessive body hair, scalp hair loss and acne. This kind of hormonal imbalance is often seen in people with PCOS who show elevated levels of androgens and hence present symptoms of hirsutism.
Hirsutism has no permanent cure and its management broadly depends on cosmetic treatment such as shaving, waxing, laser and treating the underlying hormonal imbalance. Hirsutism can take up to a year to show a visible difference so it is important to stay consistent with your treatment plan and continue to follow a healthy lifestyle to improve your overall quality of health!
