EverQuest 3 is likely happening with the meeting not long ago regarding what it would look like and the hiring for it happening at Darkpaw AKA Daybreak AKA EG7, and with a new EverQuest hanging in the air, the entire MMO landscape feels different : And for the first time in a long time, based on the conversations they had about what EverQuest 3 should be : It sounds like they understand the need for a more classicly spirited oldschool approach to MMO design : They mentioned 80% familiar, 10% improved, 10% new and a need for it to be difficult and feel classic. Well, I already have a whole video about that : today I want to talk about my wishlist : the things I want to see from EverQuest 3 and what I think would make the EverQuest fans happy and keep them playing and of course bring in a slew of new players, of course this is all speculation, this is all for fun
#1. EverQuest 3 needs to have a Massive and complicated world : When we step out from our starting city, we should look around us in awe seeing a world of adventure and excitement full of more things to do than we as humans could possibly ever accomplish : or at least make us feel that way. Let our mouths drop open as we stare across the wilderness filled with treacherous monsters and as our mouth-breathing begins to quicken : keep us hooked with nooks and crannies ripe for exploration and discovery.
#2 EverQuest 3 needs to have Classic Class Design : The original Dungeons & Dragons classes are perfect fits for EverQuest : There is no reason to re-create new classes or design philosophies : we're nerds, we like our Warriors, Paladins, Shadowknights, Enchanters, Wizards, Druids, Clerics, Rangers and so forth : Take the class design straight out of EverQuest 1 and then put it into EverQuest 3, there may need to be a couple of concessions made : but keep the spirit of each class the same : it worked then and it will work now. Classes HAVE TO MATTER : They have to have their own identity : one of the reasons EverQuest was so addicting was trying other classes or playing with other classes and understanding how adding an Enchanter to your group completely changes the way your group plays, and that's true for all the classes
#3 EverQuest 3 needs to embrace public dungeons and the dynamics it causes but also understand that some things have to be instanced as well : There is nothing wrong with doing a combination of both to appeal to everyone with different time schedules : I wish I could just say, leave everything open and no instances, but the reality is : for things like Raid bosses for example : to avoid 1 major mega guild controlling it and ruining it for everyone else : and because we all got lives and responsibilities : some instancing is out-right required in MMOs these days : but don't forget the EverQuest roots : Allow for MASSIVE dungeons like Guk : Heck, you can use the exact same maps in many cases, just add a few new paths and routes and secrets
#4 EverQuest 3 has to have factions, and lots of them : Nothing screams : this is a real world than having certain people hate your guts and want to punch you right in the face until you are a corpse like having a faction system that means in many cases if one faction loves you, another hates you : Knowing that a certain race or class can't go to a certain area and the amount of adventure that causes or the feeling of grinding out reputation until you CAN enter that city or place is just unimaginably cool and gratifying.
#5 EverQuest 3 has to make us, the players, respect the world : and one way of doing that is Death Penalties : I think Embers Adrift has this down to a science : we die, we drop our stuff in our inventory, but we keep the armor we have on, we do NOT lose experience, but perhaps an experience debt that a portion of our XP will go to recover it : And with an arrow pointing the direction to our corpse on our portrait. It's fair, we still have to go get our stuff, it makes banks more important, and we still get a corpse run
#6 Don't underestimate the influence of EverQuest : It's not just the people that have played the original that are facinated with EverQuest : A modern looking EverQuest with a modern UI would attract a TON of new players who simply don't play EverQuest right now because for them, without nostalgia for it, they feel it is too late to start now, they are turned away from the UI or the graphics.
