Residents of Mariannhill, west of Durban, have commended police after they shot dead nine suspects who were wanted for various serious and violent crimes in the area.

Locals say the criminals have held them under siege for years. KwaZulu-Natal police say the gang was also notorious for illegally occupying homes, and turning them into drug dens.

Among the victims were three teenagers, and police found three firearms.
