In 2017-18 University of Reading Department of Classics scholars joined an international cohort of scholars in commemorating the life and work of Johann Joachim Winckelmann, 1717-68, who strongly influenced the reception of the taste for Classics in Europe, both in and beyond the 'gentleman's library'.

Their research on Winckelmann's influence resulted in series of workshops and exhibitions, culminating in a special exhibition hosted by the University of Oxford's Christ Church Upper Library, 'Winckelmann and Curiosity in the 18th-century Gentleman's Library'.
