In this video we breakdown everything you need to know to get your Plumbing license in Alabama. For plumbing contractors looking to take on jobs in the state of Alabama, there are a few different classifications that you can apply for:

Apprentice Plumber
Journeyman Plumber
Master Plumber

Each classification is going to require you to meet the basic requirements for licensing which are:

18 years of age
USA Identification
Social Security Number

Applications are reviewed on a case by case basis. So in some instances, you may be able to become an apprentice if you are under the age of 18. You may also be able to get licensed if you do not have all of the documentation, but ultimately it will be up to the state board.

The process to get the Master Plumber license in Alabama is slightly different from other states. Alabama processes applications during their quarterly board meetings.

Once you submit your application to the Plumber's and Gas Fitter's Examining board, they will review it and then invite you to take the examination.

The journeyman examination will cover:

Plumbing Fixtures and Terminology
Plumbing Fundamentals
Traps, Cleanouts, and Interceptors
Drainage Requirements
Vent Requirements
Water Distribution
Plan and Analysis

The Master Plumber examination will cover everything on the journeyman exam but there will also be a section where you will be tested on business and law-related concepts such as:

Business Organization
Risk Management
Project Management
Estimating
Safety and Environmental
Payroll and Employment Taxes
Financial Management
Contracts
Lien Laws
Licensing Laws

Both exams will be open book, taken on a computer, and will require a 70% score to pass.

It is also important to remember that if you plan on bidding on projects that exceed $50,000 you will need to get licensed with the Board of General Contractors.
