Southern Cemetery in Greater Manchester opened 1879 with 100 acres, it was soon expanded in 1926 with an extra 90 acres. it is home to some of Manchester's most famous including LS Lowry, philanthropist John Rylands, British aviator John Alcock (who made history with the first non-stop transatlantic flight in 1919) and former Manchester United Manager, Sir Matt Busby, Billy Meredith who played for Manchester City. Leslie Ann Downey and Edward Evans are also buried in this cemetery.
