0:00 - Rear Roller Alignment
5:21 - Alignment Jig Construction

The rear roller is adjustable in relation to the bottom blade. Correct alignment ensures an even height of cut across the width of the bottom blade and cutter. If the roller is not aligned, you may suffer stripes which appear shorter on one side.

In this video, we demonstrate the use of an alignment jig to measure alignment. The jig simply includes a flat surface and a strip of material consistent in thickness across its length (9mm MDF in this case screwed to a melamine base).

You can achieve the same result using only a strip of MDF or particleboard thick enough so the front roller clears the base or ground. Beware, concrete garage floors are not always flat!

Position the mower with the soleplate roughly in place on the strip of MDF.

Loosen the nut securing the front roller height adjuster, as well as the nut on the opposite side of the cradle, if necessary. Now raise the front roller as far as necessary so it can rotate freely without contacting the base of the jig.

Position the mower so it's sitting square to the reference board.

Sight under the soleplate and examine the gap between soleplate and MDF strip from either side of the mower (extra light will help).

If any alignment adjustment is necessary, loosen the three bolts securing the rear roller bearing housing to the engine side of the mower (opposite the chain side). The chain-side bearing housing is not adjustable.

The two rear-most holes of the bearing housing are elongated whereas the leading hole is fixed; the bearing housing (and therefore the frame of the mower) can pivot on the forward bolt and move up or down as required to achieve alignment. Adjust as required until the bottom blade rests even on the MDF strip.

Finish up by tightening the three bearing housing nuts. Be careful not to overtighten these nuts.

About me and this channel: I'm Michael, a homeowner and aspiring lawn addict. I make these videos to share as much as I can, as best I can, from my recent experience rebuilding two Scott Bonnar 45 mowers. Although I'm a passionate wood worker and ex-IT guy, I have zero mechanical training. I'm no expert on these subjects but I learn by sharing and it encourages me to grow a better lawn and build a better mower if I know you're watching!
