Welcome to our Social Influence lesson for GCSE Psychology! In this video, we’ll explore what drives us to follow the crowd through conformity, using Asch’s famous study to understand how factors like group size, anonymity, and task difficulty can change our behavior. We’ll also look at dispositional aspects, such as personality and expertise, that make some people more likely to conform than others.

Next, we’ll dive into obedience, unpacking Milgram’s Agency theory to see how authority, culture, and proximity influence our willingness to follow orders—even if it means doing something we wouldn’t normally do. We’ll also learn about Adorno’s Authoritarian Personality and discover how our personal traits impact how we respond to authority figures. Lastly, we’ll explore bystander behavior with Piliavin’s subway study, and discuss the social and dispositional factors that guide whether we step in to help others—or walk away. We’ll finish by examining crowd and collective behavior, taking a look at prosocial vs. antisocial actions, social loafing, and deindividuation.
