Homeless Man Relocates Queen-Sized Bed from Venice Beach After Police Interaction

On the morning of Monday, December 30, 2024, Los Angeles Police Department officers encountered a homeless man maneuvering a shopping cart topped with a queen-sized bed near Venice Beach. The officers informed the man that large personal items such as furniture are prohibited on the beach. In compliance, the man began pushing his belongings eastward on Rose Avenue. No citations were issued during the interaction.

The incident highlights Los Angeles Municipal Code Section 56.11, which regulates the storage of personal property in public spaces. Under this ordinance, personal items must not exceed a 60-gallon capacity, ensuring essential belongings can be retained without creating hazards or blocking public access.

The code also prohibits “bulky items,” including furniture and appliances, on public property, with exceptions made for essential mobility aids such as wheelchairs and walkers. Amended in 2016, Section 56.11 seeks to balance the public's need for accessible spaces with the rights of unhoused individuals to retain vital personal belongings.
