Explore the biodiverse ecosystems of Suriname through our video series “Forest Types of Suriname”, presented by Frits van Troon, a Saramacca Maroon biodiversity expert and tireless advocate for the protection of Suriname’s forests.

In this episode, we learn about the high dryland forests of eastern Suriname at the Mapane Research Station of CELOS (Suriname Center for Agricultural Research). We learn how to identify many towering tree species, as well as palms and smaller plants in the undergrowth. Monkeys and agoutis (forest rodents) help shape this ecosystem by consuming forest fruits and dispersing the seeds as they travel from place to place.

The forest and many of the tree species in this region of Suriname are under threat from deforestation due to road access and logging activity. Frits tells us that “not much is left” of the intact high dryland forests in eastern Suriname.

*High dryland forest is the terminology used by ecologists and foresters in Suriname to indicate old-growth tropical forests that are: 1) tall in stature (= high) and 2) growing on soils that are not seasonally or permanently flooded (= dryland). This forest type is known as terra firme forest in Brazil.
