Drivers in St. Johns County could soon see relief from one of the area’s biggest traffic headaches. County leaders broke ground Monday on a $20 million project to upgrade the intersection of State Road 16 and International Golf Parkway.
The project will expand SR 16 to four lanes from Mill Creek Park to IGP and install a smart traffic light system that uses sensors to adjust to traffic volume, keeping cars moving more smoothly.
Commissioner Sarah Arnold says the upgrade is overdue, pointing to the heavy congestion near four schools all clustered on the same road. Superintendent Dr. Brennan Asplen says the project will be a tremendous asset for students, parents, and staff traveling to Tocoi Creek High, Mill Creek Academy, Pacetti Bay Middle, Picolata Crossing, and Wards Creek Elementary.
The improvements are part of a $24.7 million effort, with completion expected by spring 2026.
