Flying foxes (main representatives belonging to the genus Pteropus) are large herbivorous bats that are found in the tropics of Asia, Australia, and multiple islands in the Indian and Pacific oceans. Size varies from species to species, with the largest species (the golden-capped flying fox) sporting a wingspan of 6 feet. Flying foxes are social animals and roost together in groups called camps. They mainly roost in trees, with large ones being capable of housing hundreds of bats. Flying fox camps can be very noisy places, especially at dusk, when the air is full of the screeches, screams, and chitters that flying foxes make.


Despite their intimidating size, flying foxes are herbivores and feed primarily on fruit. Flying foxes use their keen night vision and excellent sense of smell to find fruit at night. Flying foxes are important to the ecosystems they live in, for while they’re flying around and eating fruit, they either spit or poop any fruit seeds out. Those fruit trees give us oxygen, medicine, and food. Those fruit trees also provide food and shelter for many other animals that live in tropical rainforests and jungles such as monkeys and birds.


Flying foxes are Threatened, unfortunately. Habitat loss in the form of deforestation for exploitation of natural resources, overhunting, and persecution are their main threats. 6 species of flying foxes are already extinct due to those anthropomorphic factors.
