Recognition of Indigenous service.

Описание к видео Recognition of Indigenous service.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have served in every conflict in which Australia has been engaged. Research at the Australian War Memorial is putting names to those who served.

Until 1949 racist attitudes and policies made joining the military difficult for Indigenous Australians.
Many were rejected on the grounds of race.
In spite of this, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people did enlist, often hiding their true identity to serve and die for Australia.

Before 1980 Indigenous identity was not recorded upon enlistment.

The names of more than 2000 people of Indigenous descent who enlisted for military service have now been recorded.
