I stood in the center of my kitchen, the phone pressed so hard against my ear it hurt. “My energy takes up too much room?” I repeated, staring at the granite countertop. “Mom, I’m the one paying for the room. I’m the one paying for the food on the table.”

“Oh, stop it. You always make it about money,” she sighed, a long, suffering sound that static crackled through the line. “This is about family harmony. We just think it’s best if you sit this one out. Take the day to reflect on your attitude. Maybe go for a walk. Work on that... heaviness you’re carrying.”

The code was clear. Heaviness meant my weight. Attitude meant my refusal to let her poke at my stomach in front of my nieces last Thanksgiving.

I smiled, but it wasn't a happy expression. It was the sharp, jagged grin of a trap snapping shut. “Okay,” I said softly.

The line went dead silent. For a moment, I thought she’d stopped breathing. Then I heard it — shallow, uneven, the faint hum of her television in the background.

“What do you mean, canceled?” she asked, her voice dropping an octave.

“I mean, have a lovely Sunday, Mom.”

I didn’t wait for the retort. I tapped the red icon and tossed the phone onto the island face down. My hands were trembling, a fine, violent vibration that traveled all the way up to my shoulders. It wasn't sorrow. It was the adrenaline of someone jumping out of a plane without checking their chute.
