Thessaloniki is the capital of the prefecture Macedonia (Makedonia, Μακεδονία, Македонија) and has 1 million inhabitants in its metropolitan region. Thessaloniki means 'the victory at Thessaly'. In other languages the city is known as Thessalonique in French, Solun in Slavic, Selanik in Turkish and Salonicco in Italian.

Halkidiki (Χαλκιδική, Chalkidiki, Chalkidice) is a coastal area south of Thessaloniki. Each summer millions of tourists from the Balkan Peninsula are heading are heading to Halkidiki in particular to Sithonia for their holidays.

The city of Thessaloniki was already big in Ancient Greek and Roman times and continued to be a huge city during the reign of the Byzantines and the Ottomans in the Middle Ages. Although there was a big fire in the First World War which destroyed a big part of the lower medieval city centre, the upper town from the Middle Ages with the castle still exists. Before WWI Salonica had a population of 40 percent of Jewish decent, mostly Sephardic Jews (refugees from the Iberian Peninsula). As does the old Roman Greek centre (with the Rotonda and an arch) and the White Tower at the coast.
