Jake's fastest lap from our first day at Harris Hill. We only had a couple of sessions to work together, but these were enough to find areas for fast and easy gains.
A general comment on the lap is that Jake needs some more seat time to get more comfortable with the limits of the car's grip, as he's reluctant to carry speed in areas that make for fast laps.
What's more easily addressed is changes to his racing line.
T1-T3: This section is really good. His turn in for T1 is solid, he gets down to the apex, and allows the car to use the necessary track on exit. He sets the car up well for turn in to T2 and T3, and forms a double apex from these corners, which is my compromise to avoid the massive bump on the outside of T3 exit.
T4 is good as well, he clips the grass on the inside at the crest of the hill, and uses the area between the crest and the apex to slow the car and bend it down to the apex.
Entry to T5 is solid, and he's patient on throttle, which is critical to generating speed for the "straightaway" between T5 and T7. Its after the apex and through track out of T5 where I feel like Jake is slowing the car. At 0:37 he's dialing in more steering input, when he should be starting to release the wheel, to allow the car to accelerate more. It's subtle, but he's moving the car to track left earlier than necessary to set up for T6. Given how critical Turn 6 is, I tend to straighten the wheel earlier, and ease the car over to the left, allowing it to generate as much speed as possible.
Jake is track left at 0:42 in the video, while I typically aim to have the car left at around 0:44. There is a line of white paint on the left of the track before T6 turn in. I try to get the car track left where this paint line starts, which allows plenty of time to run straight and get the car settled for max grip through T6.
Jake's entry for T7 is solid. He runs a nice late apex that this corner demands, but he leaves a car width of track on the outside on exit. Allowing the car to run to track edge increases the radius of the turn, which increases the speed with which a corner can be taken. Jake starts off great, gets to the apex, but then leaves time on the table by keeping the car tight on track out.
T8 is a similar situation. He sets up well for turn in, gets the car down to the apex, but then leaves a car width of track on exit. When pushing to improve lap times, tracking out to track edge will give more speed. This is especially critical on T9, which can be taken flat out in most cars.
For T10, Jake sets up well and initiates his turn in at the right point, but does not bend the car down to the apex effectively, even though the tires had more grip available (you can hear there's no squealing in the video). This causes him to run wide of the apex, but then he makes the turn even tighter and slower by tracking out to the middle of the track, rather than going to track edge on the left of the track.
His exit from T10 sets him up to be relatively wide for turn in to T11, but his apex and track out for T11 is correct.
All in all a great first session with Jake. He did manage a 1:-33.07 for a PB, which is really respectable for his first time in the car at a track he hasn't driven in a couple of years.
