As spotted by Phoronix, Intel has begun the enablement of 5th display support for its DG2 GPUs. 

Intel i915 graphics driver received a patch that brings 5th display support for the Intel DG2 GPU family. This is an internal codename for Arc Alchemist discrete GPU family that will be released this year for mobile and desktop platforms.

The Linux i915 kernel patch does not explain how does the DG2 GPU family support 5 displays. In fact, none of the leaked photos of the engineering samples had any sign of the fifth display output. Arc Alchemist cards could theoretically support 5th display through USB Type-C DP HUBs, however, the samples that were photographed only had either HDMI or DisplayPort connectors.


The 5th display makes a lot more sense once we consider workstation models, such as Radeon PRO W6800 with 6 mini DisplayPorts.





In the PugetBench Photoshop test, the 6900HS+6800S combo actually offers better performance than Intel Core i9-12900H+RTX3080, which is even more impressive considering that both AMD processors are custom power-limited chips.


This is not the first time AMD and ASUS have collaborated to prepare a new 14-inch ROG Zephyrus G14 laptop. The 6000-series model is actually the third version with improved hardware specs and built quality. According to the Geekbench database, AMD Rembrandt-based model offers ~5% and 20% better performance than its successor with 5900HS.

AMD's new market cap is a far cry from July 2020 when the company's stock price surpassed Intel's for the first time in 15 years but it only had a market cap of $74 billion compared to Intel's $260 billion. Back then, Intel's stock was worth $61.57 compared to AMD's $61.79, but the picture is quite a bit different now with Intel's stock weighing in at $48.44 compared to AMD's $121.47.
