It was far from an ordinary Friday night under the lights for Gresham High School Football player Tucker Santillanes, who remains in the intensive care unit (ICU) after suffering a serious neck injury during a game on Sept. 19.

While attempting a tackle against David Douglas High School, Tucker collapsed following a head-on collision, leaving him motionless on the field.

Tucker's father, Tom Santillanes, recalled the harrowing moments when he and his wife witnessed their son go down on the turf, unable to move.

"When you see your son go down and you recognize his number, you know, it takes your breath away," Tom told KATU. "He's got so much life ahead of him, but you're watching this and you think, what in the world is going to come of it?"

Tucker was taken off the field by an ambulance after sustaining a serious neck injury that required emergency surgery to repair his C5 vertebrae.
