A gentleman came to me because he’d been told he was having anger management issues.
It became clear he was under a lot of pressure - at work and home. But instead of sharing his feelings, he’d been pushing them down. As both external and internal pressures rose, he became a pressure cooker waiting to explode.
It’s commonly believed men generally find it harder to talk about their feelings. Society has taught them emotions are “weak” or “for girls”.
The inability to feel, work through and manage our emotional intelligence leads to ineffective work & leadership behaviours. Unmanaged fear is projected in e.g. micromanagement, control, bullying...
There's been a surge of women empowerment/women in leadership/confident women initiatives across companies worldwide. But what about the men at work?
Some might argue it’s redundant. Companies could offer emotional management programmes for men. But the deep-rooted shame associated with “being emotional” would stop many from attending.
What do you think? Could companies be doing more to provide emotional support for male employees?
And men - would you attend if your company created such a programme? Knowing how we manage our emotions determines our success - in our careers & at home?
Thoughts?
