The much-awaited Digital Personal Data Protection Bill 2023 was introduced by the Union Minister of Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw in the Lok Sabha.

While the Bill calls for setting up a data protection board, critics argue that the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill (DPDP Bill) could also allow the government to direct any entity to furnish information “as it may call for,” allowing the Centre greater control over the law.

The Data Protection Board can impose a penalty upto Rs 250 crore on data fiduciaries who breach the compliance requirements.

Concerns about the government getting unrestricted access to personal data of citizens in the garb of 'national interest' is up for debate.
