After the policy battles, public fallings-out and high turnover of Donald Trump’s first administration, one attribute is being prioritised in the search for his cabinet team if he wins a second term: loyalty.

Only six of the 24 seats in Trump’s 2017-21 cabinet were held by the same person throughout his four-year tenure, but the churn of the first term has not dampened competition for places in a second.

About a quarter of those in post at the end of Trump’s presidency in January 2021 could be in contention for a return to his team, which will consist of 23 members if he follows through on a pledge to scrap the Department of Education.
