𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗽?

It happens all the time! And it is often the key to teaching adaptive behaviors. 🔑

We might relate reinforcement to “good” behavior, but it’s actually defined by its effect on behavior. 🤯

In the video example: 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙜𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙨 𝙘𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙮, 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙙 𝙜𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙚𝙩.

The parent positively reinforces their child’s kicking and screaming behavior: A - Parent says "No", 𝗕 - 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗸𝗶𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀 / 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰, C - Child gets candy

And, in the 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 example, the child negatively reinforces their parent’s candy giving behavior: A - Child kicks and screams / make a scene in public, 𝗕 - 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘆, C - Child goes quiet / Removes scene in public

I use this example to note that reinforcement 𝗗𝗢𝗘𝗦 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗘𝗤𝗨𝗔𝗟 reward. If I had to guess, I would say the parent did not want to reward their child for making a scene.

Reinforcement causes behavior to stick around, and this is a classic reinforcement loop!

Behavior Analysts and Registered Behavior Technicians are environmental detectives. They are assigned cases where maladaptive behaviors have been reinforced. Their role is to uncover the function of those behaviors and teach replacement behaviors. 𝙒𝙚 𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 "𝘾" 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙚𝙦𝙪𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙗𝙚𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙞𝙤𝙧 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝙘𝙡𝙪𝙚. 🔎

Both the child and parent are integral in the process. We get to help people set up their life for success, and we do this on an individual client basis 🫶🏼

And the parent and child can have an experience “at the grocery store” without the kicking and screaming. 😊
