Описание к видео Desitdown News (Four African countries taken off global money laundering ‘grey list’)

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the international watchdog on financial crimes, has officially removed four African nations — Senegal, Burkina Faso, Uganda, and South Sudan — from its “grey list” after they demonstrated significant progress in strengthening their anti- money-laundering and counter-terrorist financing systems.

The announcement, made on Friday at the FATF’s plenary meeting in Paris, marks a major milestone for the countries involved, which had faced years of heightened scrutiny from globalfinancial institutions. Being on the grey list often results in increased monitoring, reduced foreign investment, and tighter banking restrictions.

FATF President Elisa de Anda Madrazo praised the efforts of the four countries, noting that they had “implemented strong legal and regulatory reforms” to improve transparency, enforce financial oversight, and curb illicit financial flows. “Each nation has shown clear political commitment and technical progress in addressing strategic deficiencies,” she said.

In Uganda, authorities strengthened laws on beneficial ownership and enhanced monitoring of non-bank financial institutions. Senegal and Burkina Faso introduced tougher regulations on cross-border money transfers and improved coordination between law enforcement and financial intelligence units. South Sudan, one of the world’s youngest nations, made notable strides by passing its first comprehensive anti-money-laundering legislation and establishing a national financial intelligence authority.

Experts say the delisting could boost investor confidence and ease international transactions, particularly in sectors such as banking, real estate, and mining. However, FATF cautioned that continued vigilance is essential to prevent backsliding. African Union officials welcomed the development, calling it a sign of growing financial accountability across the continent.

“This shows that African nations can meet the highest global standards when given support and political will,” an AU spokesperson said. The countries will now transition to regular monitoring, joining other compliant nations under FATF’s global framework.
