Attack on Kyiv shows ‘Russia doesn’t want peace’, Zelensky says

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said an intense overnight Russian attack on Kyiv shows that Moscow “doesn’t want peace,” as he travelled to Florida for talks with U.S. President Donald Trump on a new 20-point peace plan agreed by American and Ukrainian envoys.

The 10-hour barrage of missiles and drones directed at the Ukrainian capital killed two people and injured at least 32 others, according to local authorities. Ukraine’s minister for development, Oleksiy Kuleba, said damage to energy infrastructure left around 40 percent of residential buildings in Kyiv and nearby districts without heating.

Zelensky wrote on Telegram that Russia launched almost 500 drones and 40 missiles, targeting energy and civilian infrastructure, while Russia’s defence ministry said it used long-range precision weapons against facilities it claimed were linked to Ukraine’s armed forces and military industry.

Images from Kyiv showed apartment blocks with gaping holes and homes ablaze. Ukraine’s emergency services evacuated 68 people from a retirement home in the Darnytskyi district, and a residential high-rise where BBC journalist Anastasiya Gribanova lives was struck, though she was unharmed.

Zelensky urged allies to take strong action, saying the attacks prove Russian President Vladimir Putin does not want to end the war. He later met briefly with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Nova Scotia, where Carney pledged $2.5 billion CAD in economic assistance. He agreed that lasting peace would require a willing Russia.

The comments come ahead of Zelensky’s expected meeting with Trump to discuss the revised peace proposal, which includes possible security guarantees and addresses territorial and economic issues, as fighting and air defence activity continued on both sides.
