Описание к видео US caps year of weak labor market as hiring continues at modest pace

Job growth remained soft to end the year, a government report showed Friday.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that American employers added 50,000 jobs to their payrolls in December, following a revised 56,000 in November and a loss of 173,000 jobs in October. Revisions dropped the employment total for the previous two months by 76,000 compared to what the BLS had reported.

The December job growth fell short of forecasts and capped a year with the weakest job growth in over a decade, outside of the pandemic year of 2020.

Payroll employment rose by 584,000 in 2025, an average monthly gain of 49,000, the BLS said. That compares to an average monthly gain of 168,000 the year before.

"The December jobs report at once tells us a lot, but then again not a lot that’s new,” Bankrate Senior Economic Analyst Mark Hamrick said via email. “It affirms the established narrative about the low hire, low fire job market."

Labor economist Aaron Sojourner broke down the new jobs report in a series of social media posts.

“The big picture -- job growth has basically flatlined,” he wrote.
