What is malocclusion?
Malocclusion or “bad bites” is one of the most common dental problems. When you have malocclusion, your upper and lower teeth don’t align when you close your mouth.

What causes malocclusion?
Malocclusion can happen several different ways:
1. Your teeth are too large for your jaw, causing your teeth to crowd together and affect the alignment between your upper and lower jaw.
2. You often sucked your thumb when you were a baby or toddler.
3. You lost a tooth and your remaining teeth shifted to fill that gap.
4. You have an inherited condition that affects your jaw, causing your teeth to be misaligned.

What are the symptoms of a malocclusion?
Depending on the classification of malocclusion, the symptoms of the disorder may be subtle or severe. Typical symptoms of malocclusion include:

improper alignment of your teeth
changes in the appearance of your face
frequent biting of your inner cheeks or tongue
discomfort when chewing or biting
speech changes, including the development of a lisp
breathing through your mouth rather than your nose
