My first impression of Funchal, the capital city of Portugal's Madeira archipelago was how easy it was to walk around the city and get to the Marina. A city of over 600 years, I knew I was going to see narrow streets of the old world. A place where Christopher Columbus was one of its early settlers. It was a location that I could walk around comfortably dressed without feeling undressed with the laid back lifestyle as I visited the Cathedral of Funchal, and viewed the beautiful painted doors of the “Art of open doors project”. Enjoyed touring the beautiful and impressive gardens and water features that put me in a natural atmosphere and being in view of the ocean, all being backed by the rolling hills with centuries old houses climbing up. There was no shortage of choosing a great place to eat and enjoy a glass of Madeira wine that the Island is famous for.
