Today we have here comparison of the best consumer NetBurst ans K8 based processors. NetBurst is represented by Pentium Extreme Edition 965, which is Dual Core with HT. In fact due to poor availability of Extreme CPUs, this is actually Xeon 5080 - exactly the same thing, but for LGA 771. Default frequency is 3.73 GHz and here I overclocked it to 4.2 GHz. It is not much, but this piece seems to be unstable when pushed further... and 180W power consumption for the CPU alone seems a lot, especially when the motherboard has only 4-pin for powering the CPU.

As for the K8, the logical choice is the fastest one - A64 X2 6400+. This one runs at solid 3.2 GHz which close to the limit of the architecture, therefore I decided to leave it at stock. It performs well enough :)

These processors never really met in reviews because they are from different times. Pentium EE was introduced early in 2006, shortly before Conroe appeared and dominated everything. So NetBurst was quickly forgotten, especially the $1000 parts. Athlon 64 X2 6400+ was completely different product. It was an attempt to bring some competition to the Core 2 processors. While 6400+ was the AMD's flagship at the time, it could only rival the slower models of Core 2 Duo. Because of that, the launch price was $220 in August 2007.


All the test scenes are 100% CPU limited. Testing resolution is always 1920x1080 with 16xAF and vsync off. All the videos are recorded using dedicated PC with capture card, there is zero performance impact on the tested CPUs.

The power consumption of the CPUs is measured by my own wattmeter designed for this purpose. It also has interface to integrate the power figures to HWinfo64 and therefore also to MSI Afterburner and RTSS. The whole system power consumption measurement is provided by Corsair RM1000i and HWinfo64.
