Treatment wetlands are favoured solutions in cases of stormwater and surface water management. This also applies to the situation in China's densely populated cities. In the lowland areas of major rivers, cities struggle with heavily polluted black and smelly canals. In two demonstration projects in the Suzhou metropolitan area, comprehensive solutions were developed with the help of constructed wetlands. These can be excellently integrated into Sponge City planning or Sustainable Urban Drainage Strategies (SuDS).
Different types were used depending on the location and task. Retention soil filters for the treatment of very dynamic stormwater and combined sewer inlets, vegetated vertical filters for surface water treatment and recirculation, and actively aerated soil filters for the treatment of highly compressed inlets.
The solutions presented can be applied to typical situations in numerous cities and countries. Practical experience is of great value here.
