"But, only by demonstrating their irreversible commitment to achieving a world free of nuclear weapons will the weapon states can contribute to the legitimacy of the non-proliferation regime and gain the moral authority to call on the rest of the world to curb the proliferation of these inhumane weapons."

STORYLINE:
The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency on Wednesday asked nuclear weapon states to demonstrate "an irreversible commitment to achieving a world free of nuclear weapons" if they wanted to "gain the moral authority" to push the rest of the world towards non-proliferation.
ElBaradei was speaking in India after being awarded the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development.
In his acceptance speech, the IAEA chief also welcomed a commitment made by the US and Russia to cut their nuclear arsenals, saying nuclear disarmament was "finally back on the international agenda".
ElBaradei was awarded the India Gandhi prize for his "impassioned opposition to use of nuclear energy for military purposes".
Previous recipients of the award include Afghan President Hamid Karzai, former UN secretary-general Kofi Annan, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and former US president Jimmy Carter.
Wednesday's ceremony came a day ahead of a key meeting of international representatives over Iran's disputed nuclear programme in Geneva.
Iranian officials will meet with the so-called P5+1 - the UK, China, France, Russia and the US - plus Germany - after recent revelation that Tehran has been secretly constructing a new facility to produce nuclear fuel.
The revelation drew international condemnation and raised suspicion that Iran is trying to make a nuclear weapon.
