What is an ICO? An Initial Coin Offering, or ICO, is how blockchain startups raise funds. From a startup's perspective, when the project is not fully developed and needs capital, digital currencies raised through ICOs are a game changer. For investors, ICOs are a way to do what previously only VCs could do, invest in early-stage opportunities and bet on the digital token or startup becoming successful. Most ICOs have taken place on Ethereum, following the ERC-20 standard. Some companies have also built their own blockchain and issued their native coin. Startups use smart contracts on Ethereum to create their own crypto. Other platforms with many ICOs are Stellar, NEM, and Komodo. While the ICO has been a huge step forward in finance, connecting investors with entrepreneurs, it is not without its risks. Many fake ICOs have raised substantial funds and then disappeared.
