In the jungles of the Solomon Islands, the Pacific War reached its breaking point.

Japanese forces launched relentless night assaults to capture Henderson Field—the most important airstrip in the region. If it fell, the island fell.

Defending the perimeter was Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone, a machine-gun section leader with the U.S. Marines. As wave after wave of enemy attacks crashed into American lines, Basilone’s guns became the last barrier.

When ammunition ran out, he ran through enemy fire alone to resupply. When machine guns were destroyed, he manned one himself at point-blank range. For three days and nights, he refused to let the line break.

When the fighting ended, the airfield still stood.

For his actions at Guadalcanal, John Basilone earned the Medal of Honor, becoming one of the first great heroes of the Pacific War. He later returned to combat and was killed in action on Iwo Jima in 1945.
