Objectives:
1. Describe the impact of dementia.
2. Review evidence-based palliation for dementia symptoms.
3. Discuss ethical decision-making in dementia care.

Dr. Laura Hanson is a professor in the Division of Geriatric Medicine, Department of Medicine at the University of North Carolina, where she also serves as the Director of the Palliative Care Program. Board-certified in Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine and Hospice & Palliative Medicine, she provides clinical care for frail and seriously ill patients in diverse settings. To support expansion of real-world dementia care clinical trials, she leads the Patient and Caregiver Reported Outcomes Core for the NIA IMbedded Pragmatic Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and AD-Related Dementias (AD/ADRD) Clinical Trials (IMPACT) Collaboratory. To enhance the field of palliative care research, she is a founding member of the Palliative Care Research Cooperative group (PCRC), and current co-leads its Measures Core with Dr. Antonia Bennett. At UNC, Dr. Hanson leads a program of funded research to improve the quality of care and outcomes for people with dementia, and for other older adults living with serious illness. She has been principal investigator or co-investigator for efficacy, effectiveness and pragmatic clinical trials in dementia palliative care, including the first multi-site clinical trial of hospital-based palliative care for people with late-stage dementia.
