Complexity and Decision Making in the Wild: Stories and Lessons Learned from the Field

Decision support systems are essential to supporting transitions to just, equitable, sustainable futures. Despite calls for the inclusion of diverse communities and stakeholder organizations in decision-making processes, collaborators often struggle to communicate and share knowledge across methodological, political and interpersonal boundaries. This talk highlights stories and lessons learned over the course of several community-centered projects based out of ASU's Decision Theater. Recommendations for harnessing the natural complexity of diverse groups and interests for inclusive, community-centered convergence research are included in the Playbook to Build Resilience recently published by the Knowledge Exchange for Resilience at ASU.

Margaret Hinrichs is an Assistant Research Professor in the School of Complex Adaptive Systems. She studies the inclusion of diverse communities and stakeholder organizations in decision-making processes, particularly through the use of data informatics and models as boundary objects. Hinrichs is an Academic Enterprise Scholar in the Knowledge Exchange for Resilience and a Senior Global Futures Scientist in the Global Futures Laboratory. She is also a co-editor of the Knowledge Exchange Playbook to Build Resilience.
