Genesis 50 is the final chapter of the Book of Genesis and recounts significant events following the death of Jacob (also known as Israel). After Jacob's death, Joseph orders the embalming of his father, which takes forty days, and the Egyptians mourn for him for seventy days. Following this period of mourning, Joseph seeks and receives permission from Pharaoh to bury his father in the land of Canaan, as per Jacob's wishes.
A large funeral procession accompanies Joseph and his brothers to Canaan, where they bury Jacob in the cave of the field of Machpelah, the family burial place. After returning to Egypt, Joseph's brothers, fearing retribution for their past wrongdoings, seek forgiveness from Joseph. They appeal to Joseph's promise to their father, asking for mercy. Joseph reassures them, emphasizing God's providential plan, stating that although they intended harm, God intended it for good to accomplish the saving of many lives.
The chapter concludes with Joseph's own death. Before he dies, Joseph reassures his brothers that God will come to their aid and lead them out of Egypt to the land promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He asks them to carry his bones out of Egypt when this future exodus occurs. Joseph dies at the age of 110, and he is embalmed and placed in a coffin in Egypt, signifying the end of Genesis and setting the stage for the Book of Exodus.
