Born in Boston, Franklin was the 15th of 17 children in a modest family. He apprenticed as a printer for his brother and later moved to Philadelphia, where he became a successful printer and publisher of the Pennsylvania Gazette. His publication of Poor Richard’s Almanack gained widespread popularity for its witty proverbs and practical advice.

Scientific Achievements
Franklin was a pioneering scientist and inventor. His experiments with electricity, including the famous kite and key experiment, led to the invention of the lightning rod and advancements in understanding electrical phenomena. He also invented the Franklin stove, bifocal glasses, and contributed to meteorology and oceanography, including charting the Gulf Stream.

Political Contributions
Franklin was instrumental in shaping the emerging United States:

American Revolution: He helped draft the Declaration of Independence (1776) and served as a diplomat in France, securing critical French support for the American Revolution.
Constitutional Convention: As the oldest delegate at the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Franklin played a vital role in forging compromises that shaped the U.S. Constitution.
Abolitionist Efforts: Late in life, Franklin became a prominent advocate for the abolition of slavery, emphasizing equality and human rights.
