STORYLINE

Bells were ringing in Salzburg on Friday night to mark the 250th birthday anniversary of composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Throughout the day, Mozart mania swept the world.

The Austrian city of Salzburg, where Mozart was born on January 27 in 1756, led the celebrations.

On Friday night a range of music groups played both classic and modern versions of his compositions.

Mozart wrote more than 600 musical works before his death at 35.

He wrote his first symphonies before turning 10 and his first significant opera at 12, and he was instrumental in changing opera into the form we enjoy today.

Other greats like Beethoven and Wagner publicly recognised their debt to him.

Celebrations also took place in Vienna, where the composer lived after moving from Salzburg, and scores of other cities worldwide.

Performances of Mozart's work were planned by orchestras or opera houses in Sydney, Moscow, Washington, Prague, London, Paris, New York, Tokyo, Caracas, Quito, Havana, Mexico City, Taipei and Budapest.
