पौराणिक मान्यता है कि भगवान शिव का यह विग्रह स्वयं प्राकट्य है. मधु ने तपस्या कर इनको प्रकट किया था. दैत्यों कासंहार करने की वजह से इनका नाम भूतेश्वर महादेव पड़ा. द्वापर में भगवान कृष्ण की पूजा करने और भगवान शिव द्वारा ब्रज वासियों की रक्षा के लिए यहां विराजमान होने के कारण भोलनाथ का नाम शहर कोतवाल पड़ गया. शास्त्रों में भगवान भूतेश्वर का उल्लेख केदारनाथ की उपलिंग के रूप में मिलता है.इसलिए जो भी भगवान भूतेश्वर महादेव के दर्शन करता है. उसे केदारनाथ के दर्शनों का फल मिलता है.

Mythological belief is that this idol of Lord Shiva is self-manifested. Madhu revealed them by doing penance. Because of killing the demons, he was named Bhuteshwar Mahadev. Because of worshiping Lord Krishna in Dwapar and sitting here by Lord Shiva to protect the residents of Braj, Bholnath got the name of Kotwal city. Lord Bhuteshwar is mentioned in the scriptures as the Upalinga of Kedarnath. That's why whoever visits Lord Bhuteshwar Mahadev. He gets the fruit of seeing Kedarnath.
