It is located on the banks of the Danube, between Calafat and Turnu Severin, on the place where, from 1880 until the middle of the last century, there was an agricultural port from which wheat and flour were exported to Budapest, Vienna and the German Danube cities.
In 1997, the imposing port captaincy building, built more than 100 years ago by Italian craftsmen but abandoned for years and in ruins, was accidentally discovered and purchased by Mircea Dinescu at the second public auction. Thus, the former agricultural port had the chance to revive as a "cultural port" after more than 50 years since, with the establishment of the communist regime, it had been closed and transformed into a border picket.
