Many videos are out that show all kinds of tongue weight and trailer weights and how they relate to towing. But I couldn’t find any that showed the relationship between weight, stability and safety of a 5th wheel nor a direct comparison between a 5th wheel and comparable travel trailer. So, I made one myseft. ;)

As you can see in the video, 5th wheel trailers are just naturally more stable over travel trailers, but travel tralers can be very stable if loaded correctly. When loading your trailer you should always go with a 60/40 split; roughly 60% of the weight forward of the axles.

It’s also important to mention that while 5th wheels are very stable, if the tow vehicle looses traction, the whole set up can become unstable. When setting your trailer brakes of any type of trailer, your trailer brake controller should be set where the trailer brakes do a little bit more braking than the tow vehicle so if heavy braking is needed, the trailer will not be pushing the tow vehicle resulting in unstabilty or jackknifing.
