This webinar covers the types of hazards in research animal facilities, risk assessment of hazards, hazard mitigation, and role of oversight committees and other research professionals. Potential hazards of working in research animal facilities include animal bites, animal allergens, chemical sanitation agents, wet floors, cage washers/other equipment, lifting, ladder use, experimental hazards (biological agents, chemical agents, and radiation), and zoonotic pathogens. A critical assessment of the associated risks should be conducted to determine appropriate strategies to minimize or manage the risks. This includes the exposure route, duration, and frequency; susceptibility of the personnel; and history of occupational illness and injury in the workplace. An occupational health program is necessary, and participation of personnel should be based on the hazards posed by the animals and materials used.
