Rwandan President Paul Kagame has said anyone who betrays his country will face consequences.

The president made this announcement in a meeting in Kigale on Sunday, two weeks after Patrick Karegeya, Kagame's leading critic, was found strangled in a hotel in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Both Karegeya and Kagame played a role in ending the genocide in Rwanda in 1994. Karegeya was chief of army intelligence for 10 years, but fell out of favour with the president by 2006. He was stripped of his senior rank and fled to South Africa.

Karegeya's supporters have blamed the president for his death.

Al Jazeera's Dominic Kane reports.
