Faces Trapped In Wood Master Carver- The Original Georgia Traveler WSB-TV – [Good News]

Virgil Cavender finds faces trapped in wood … and pioneers, cowboys and Native Americans. He's surrounded by them. In the 1920, long before extreme wood carving, he would whittle. He never made much more than a pile of wood shavings. Fast forward about 50 years and Virgil became an extreme wood carver at his home in Doraville, Ga. When he looks at a piece of tree trunk, he sees a face trapped in it. Then he using his artistry, skill and patience to set it free. His second love is history and that’s his inspiration. He told me that his art was a way to leave something of himself behind … besides wood shavings.
